Featherstone Primary and Nursery School
Mental Health Statement
At Featherstone Primary and Nursery School we prioritise and care about the mental health and wellbeing of our pupils, staff and all our families.
We respect and value all children and are committed to providing a caring, friendly and safe environment for all our pupils so they can learn, in a relaxed and secure atmosphere. At our school, we are committed to promoting positive mental health and emotional wellbeing to all children (linking to Article 42 (UN Convention on the Rights of the Child) “every child has the right to the best possible health”, their families and members of staff and governors.
We pursue this aim using both universal, whole school approaches and specialised, targeted approaches aimed at vulnerable pupils. We have prioritised the Wellbeing and Mental Health of our pupils and staff and invested in training our own staff to ensure we are equipped to deal with issues that arise or can help children and families with outside support where needed.
We successfully achieved the Wellbeing Award for Schools (WAS Award) in June 2020 for promoting and supporting our staff and pupils' positive mental health and emotional wellbeing.
Our Statement of Mental Health Intent reflects the school’s core values:
Caring and celebrating together
Ambitious for our learning
Respect everyone and their Rights
Empathy for others
Since 2014 Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) has become a category of Special Educational Needs. Children with SEMH need will receive support in school. We work closely with outside agencies including Child and Adolescents Mental Health Service (CAMHS), the Educational Psychology team and Ealing Primary Centre to support to ensure the best outcomes for our children. Improved mental health starts with a conversation. Achieving that first step- mustering the courage to share something so deeply personal and troubling needs support, understanding and encouragement. This is especially true for children and young people.
If you have any concerns about a child’s mental health or wellbeing we are here to help and if we can’t, we will signpost you to those who can.
At Featherstone Primary and Nursery School, we offer the following strategies to support your child:
• A PSHE curriculum that is designed to support children’s understanding of their emotions.
• A dedicated room (The SPACE) where children can access support in a place that is calm.
• Consultations with external agencies so that you are included in knowing how to support your child’s ongoing needs.
• Support within school from a member of the Wellbeing Team.
• Daily Collective worship in class and Mindfulness with calming music
